Customs and professional habits around the world

10 Aug 2017

Globalization of markets, calls abroad, professional e-mails or business trips : our collegues are French, but American, Indian, Brazilian too... There are some intercultural differences which can be a problem in professional relationships and negociations. This article is a recapitulation of what "to do" and "not to do" around the world !

Time it’s time

In France, we can't be late at a professional meeting. German people share this value of punctuality and hate the unexpected. On the contrary, in Brazil, a late arrival of 15mn is frequent. They prefer the face-to-face than the written communication. The superior is the last arrived, and power signs are very present (accessories...). In China, the superior is considered as God, and the company objectives are the first priority, above all private opinions. In India, meetings are generally starting with private conversations. Egyptian people like the visual contact, sign of honesty and sincerity.

Taboos and decibels

In France, the question of pay and money is taboo, and you have to wait before congratulating and critisizing somebody. But the Americans don't share this value because they prefer a straight communication. In Japan as in Indonesia, you'll be badly considered if you talk too loud in public.

Be in the rhythm

You're not an early bird ? It will be difficult to conclude a contract with Canadian homologous, who plan their appointments at the first part of the day. These working hours connect with the Spanish rhythm where the siesta after-lunch is inescapable. In Algeria, like many Muslim countries, people work a five-day week, from Sunday to Thursday. So, be careful !
