How to learn a language in everyday life

Learning a foreign language takes time and effort. But time is a luxury we don’t all have. So why study grammar for hours when you can integrate language learning into your daily life? Here are some tips and techniques to help you learn a new language. These methods will allow you to more easily learn a language in everyday life, whilst also making it enjoyable!

 

  • Watch TV programmes and films in the original language, use subtitles if you need, and pay attention to the vocabulary used and the pronunciation. If the language barrier seems a little daunting, watch programmes or films that you have already seen in French.

 

  • Change the settings on your mobile or computer, or even on all of your technology – change them to the language you are learning. This is a trick that allows you to acquire the basic vocabulary of your phone or your computer. You use these tools regularly, so it's a great way to immerse yourself in the language.

 

  • Listen to a radio station or TV channel for approximately 15 minutes each day. This is a simple, yet effective method to learn a new language without too much effort. You will understand a little more every day and you will get used to the accent and the sound of the language. Don’t forget to repeat phrases you hear in order to work on your pronunciation.

 

  • Read a book. Even if the language used in books is not always the same as the spoken language, it’s important to read a language in order to understand the grammatical structures and to acquire a rich and varied vocabulary. Choose to read novels because most of the time the use relatively simple and understandable language.

 

  • Subscribe to a magazine or newspaper, or read online articles. Continue to improve your language level wile following the news and reading a magazine, newspaper or blog. This will allow you to familiarise yourself with the construction of phrases and vocabulary used. Don’t worry if you don’t understand everything to start with – the more you read, the more you will understand.
